Zelda’s Super Legacy

This witch is one of many memorable NPC encounters.

In the beginning of home gaming, okay not the beginning, but NEAR the beginning of homegaming… there was the Nintendo. And on this wonderful system there was a game called Zelda. This game was phenomenal and there was even a second iteration of this classic on the 8-bit NES but in my opinion the most fun Zelda is on the 16-bit super Nintendo. And her name is Zelda: A Link to the Past.

This game has some of the most memorable experiences on the SNES and I feel that most true retro gamers love this games. Unless, of course, they don’t like RPGs… that’s really about the only excuse if you ask me. This game is broken into two distinct stages. First, as a young Link you’re in the most normal world and must make your way against pretty normal enemies. During this time you’re trying to find Zelda and must defeat several enemy masters on your journey to find the Master Sword. Once found your quest takes a dark turn…

And so you enter the DARK WORLD. Pretty neat, huh? Okay maybe it’s a little cheesy but this game is a ton of fun. You get all kinds of fun items and abilities, including the ability to swim and various levels of special weapons and armor which have distinct powers. You also get special tools as rewards, like the hook shot; this tool lets you cross gaps in the game world. Even the ability to run is an award you earn; well I mean to run super fast. You can even master a number of spells in this version of Zelda which adds a new level of game play. More than jut a dungeon crawl though this version stands out for its puzzle.

Why is Zelda’s super legacy so special?

The original Zelda was fantastic as well

From the very beginning of this game you’re forced to think on your feet. In the very opening sequence you must solve a number of puzzles on your way into the castle. This is only the first of many though as throughout the levels and worlds there is one thing that remains constant. The fun and challenging puzzles the designers throw at you. This is one of the main reasons this game is so much fun. These puzzles really keep you interested and add to the sense of wonder in the game universe, some would say they’re Zelda’s super legacy. The puzzles combined with the challenging combat game play makes a link to the past a great addition for any old school RPG lover out there. This game is a true classic and must have for any enthusiast.
