Nobody wants to admit it but anyone who sits on their bum for hours on end and plays video games is going to have some soreness. That is, of course, unless they practice the proper stretching techniques and take sufficient breaks. It’s really imperative that stretch your muscles and get up to circulate blood every couple of hours at a bare minimum. I don’t want to make anyone panic but there was just a case in the new about a gentleman in England who passed away due to deep vein thrombosis which some believe may have been brought on, at least in part, by sedentarily playing video games for hours. I’m going to lay out some basic stretching and moving techniques to try to avoid this and other problems and live a happier, healthier lifestyle. These stretches for gamers are particularly helpful.
First of all you must, simply must, get UP off the chair or couch at least every two hours. Get up and walk around, have a dog? Take him for a short walk, he’ll love ya for it and it’s great for your health. These simple walks need only be ten or fifteen minutes to have a wonderful affect on your heart and cardiovascular system. Getting the blood pumping for just this short period of time can have a surprisingly large impact on your health so do yourself a favor and get up and move! Another important aspect of health that is extremely important to the avid gamer is hand health.
An once of prevention…
There’s nothing good about repetitive stress injuries and they’re all too easy when you’re
playing games for long hours. You can avoid this painful condition though if you take the time to stretch the hands and fingers and use proper techniques to support your wrist. It’s important to take breaks as well. When examining your gaming environment take a good hard look at how your wrists are positioned. Make sure nothing is kinked or pinching, your wrist shouldn’t be at any sort of extreme angle either. This is very important. Stretching and rolling the wrist gentle while you’re up every couple of hours is a great way to keep them in good shape as well.
These are just my personal outlooks based on reading I’ve done; if you’ve got any serious concerns make sure you speak with a doctor. I’m just a gaming enthusiast! This isn’t exactly sound medical advice, just some geek’s opinion so be careful people and check with a doctor if you have any really pressing health questions about gaming.
